Our client, The Philadelphia Inquirer, was founded in 1829 and is the third-oldest continually operating daily newspaper in the United States. It was purchased in 2014 by the non-profit Lenfest Institute, which was founded by philanthropist Gerry Lenfest to protect and promote the integrity of journalism – specifically local journalism.
They are looking for a Manager of General Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll. This role will report to their VP of Finance and manage a team of three.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Payroll Manager
Supervise the accurate preparation of the weekly payroll with strict compliance to deadlines
Oversee the payment of all employee non-tax withholdings
Ensure the accuracy in the recording of salary related expenses, withholdings, benefits and allocations
Provide timely customer service to employees and liaison to union officials with payroll questions
Provide accurate and timely wage reports to departments, insurance companies and auditors
Oversight of quarterly tax filings, annual W2 reporting, and preparation of manual forms related to 3rd party sick pay
Preparation of ad hoc payroll related reports as needed by pulling data from the Ceridian payroll system as well as the company payroll database
Accounts Payable Manager
Responsible for the payment of goods and services procured by The Philadelphia Inquirer following specific guidelines of vendor contracts, financial controls, and treasury operations
Manage payment timing to coordinate with company cash flow requirements
Responsible for the accurate reflection of expense on the monthly financial statements or balance sheet
Ownership of the supplier set-up function, including proper determination of form 1099 inclusion
Manage the 3rd party Accounts Payable company responsible for preparation of weekly payments and communication with financial institutions
Annual reconciliation of information returns, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of reporting to vendors and government agencies
Preparation of ad hoc vendor and payable related reports as needed
Manage the Accounts Payable Clerk
General Accounting Manager
Responsible for ensuring that monthly financial information is reported accurately, timely, and confidently
Preparation of the monthly close reconciliation schedule, and tracking of net income for upper management’s review
Review and enforcement of financial controls, reconciliation of financial activity, and initiation of necessary corrections
Coordinate with Treasury department for the accurate reconciliation of all bank accounts, initiating necessary correcting entries
Assist in the development and implementation of financial policies & procedures
Interface with independent auditors
Prepare support for the annual tax return
Ensure all balance sheet accounts are being reconciled on a monthly basis
Supervise the work of the two General Accountants
General Responsibilities
Prepare ad hoc analyses and reports as requested
Maintain successful relationships with internal department heads, external clients, auditors, and vendors
Manage, mentor, and develop staff
Requirements
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
7+ years accounting and payroll experience
Display high standards of integrity and ethical business practice standards including the ability to be very discrete in the handling of confidential and privileged information
Knowledge of Oracle fusion or other corporate accounting financial system
Knowledge of Ceridian Dayforce payroll application or similar
Adaptable and flexible to new ideas and changes in responsibilities as the operations develop
Detail oriented with the ability to follow through and solve problems
Able to present and express information effectively and clearly
Able to produce accurate results in a fast paced, high pressure environment
Able to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines
