The Secret Truth Series #7 Opt Out Of The Content Network

by Craig Danuloff @ ClickEquations

gun has no safetyGoogle wants to make advertising easy. They describe AdWords in simple terms, they make setup quick and easy, and they provide simple reporting on the stuff that suggests progress.

But the gun has no safety.

AdWords makes it remarkably easy to do insanely stupid and wasteful things. Things they could easily prevent at the cost of simplicity for you and revenue for them.

PPC Presence - 28 Hard Learned Tips

by Laura Callow @ SEMInsights

This isn't a post for PPC newbies. I'm not going to include an entry list of what you should do to get started in PPC, I'm just going to dive straight into a few things that I've learned over the years... Please bear in mind post is aimed at single businesses, not multi-site affiliates, though you never know...

If you have a well known brand name - 12 Thoughts:

  1. Your brand terms need to be matched with branded and verifiable adcopy, throw in those ® and TM symbols, and make use of the word 'Official'.

New linkspam algorithm from Google

by Patrick Altoft @ Blogstorm

For those of you into paid links and blog/guestbook spamming this is probably going to be bad news - Google has apparently got a new linkspam algorithm and they are actively seeking reports to test it with.

Google has been working on some new algorithms and tools to tackle linkspam and we'd like to ask for linkspam reports from you. If you'd like to tell us about web sites that appear to be using spammy links (e.g. paid links that pass PageRank, blog spammers, guestbook spammers, etc.), here's how to send us more info. Go to

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreport

and tell us about the site that appears to be employing link spam. Be sure to include the word "linkspam" (all one word, all lower-case) in the textarea (the last field in the form).

Developing Your Elevator Pitch

by Corry Prohens

Elevator PitchAn elevator pitch is a 30-60 second sound bite that explains who you are and what you do. Per the name, you are supposed to be able to deliver it before the elevator doors open at the lobby. You are supposed to use plain and simple language so that anyone, in any context, can understand what you are saying. It is your verbal essence. Isn't that a shampoo brand?

For me it would be, "Hi, I'm Corry Prohens. I recruit web analytics and digital media people for positions all over the world. I place contractors and full-time analytics talent. We are the top recruiting firm in the world for our little niche."

That is what I boil down to. That's what I do every day. Sure, I do other stuff too, but there is no room for everything in your elevator pitch. Just your verbal essence (cue the hair model)...

The Latest Survey Results

Our latest survey concerns the recent news of Adobe's acquisition of Omniture. We wanted to get an idea of what the Web Analytics community thought about the acquisition. Here are the results so far:

43% believe there will be no NEAR TERM (6-12 MONTH) impact on the pace and type of Omniture's product development.

35% believe there will be a positive LONGER-TERM (12-36 MONTH) impact on the quality of customer service and professional services.

45% said impact on Omniture's competitors (Webtrends, Coremetrics, Unica…) will be positive.

52% believe this a good thing for the Web Analytics community as a whole.
