"Hiring? What Works: Fresh blood or old hands? Experience or Novicity?"

Web Analytics: An Hour A Day

A reader of the blog had a interesting question that made me think about the value of experience, or the value of "having been around for a while", vs the value of pure passion and excitement and moldability.

I get lots of wonderful email every day with delightful questions, this one made me think harder.

Here is the actual excerpted question…..

….with a quandary: Is it better to hire and train a really bright, freshly minted college grad, or does the extra value returned by someone who’s been a web business analyst for several year merit the extra expense?

The answer is of course: It depends....

 TradeKing – 3 positions
Location: Boca Raton, FL

My team has recently been retained by this firm — the fastest growing online brokerage in the country. This firm was rated by Barron's the best online brokerage for the past three years running, which has been a major help in building their 300,000+ customer base and reaching profitability. The firm is really starting to hit their stride and has invested heavily in the past year in the technology infrastructure and talent that they need to grow the business rapidly. We are now conducting three searches for them:
  1. Manager of Online Acquisition Marketing: Take ownership of the web channel for customer acquisition, including their $3MM annual search budget, all SEO activities, all search and online advertising-related analytics, all PPC. $80k + bonus + equity
  2. Manager of Online Retention Marketing: Take ownership of all CRM, retention and loyalty programs and processes. Also own all email marketing (both retention and acquisition-focused). Unusually broad role with a lot of room for innovation. Must have experience running customer retention / customer loyalty programs + email campaign mgmt. $80k + bonus + equity
  3. Manager of Data Solutions: A very unusual opportunity to take over the whole BI function — from marketing analytics through financial data/reporting to product development, operations, exec-level decision support — the whole thing. You would basically inherit their SQL data warehouse and be responsible for delivering data to all stakeholders while establishing the vision and direction for BI within the firm (how to automate reporting, build the team, bring in new tools & bring value to stakeholders). $100k + bonus + equity
 Data Strategist(s)
Location: New York $70 - $110k

We just started working with this 60-year old, premier name in the agency world to help them build their marketing analytics team in NY. They have two open positions currently for what they call "Data Strategists". These are essentially cross-channel marketing analytics positions that support online and offline clients in various industries. They look for people with strong technical and analytical skills as well as the ability to work face-to-face with clients.
 Director of Marketing Analytics
Location: San Francisco, CA - $125k

This mobile advertising start-up is extremely well funded and high profile. They have had huge success in building the business and are profitable after only two years in business. They are looking for someone to take over, build and run their marketing analytics team. Inherit two analysts and work with internal marketing and sales clients to interpret the results of mobile ad campaigns for clients. Multi-channel marketing analytics experience at the mgmt level required (agency or client-side).
 Manager of Web Analytics
Location: Princeton, NJ - $85k

We have filled several positions with this client over the last couple of years and people love working there. They are a blue chip media company with online and offline properties that are household names. They are now looking for someone to run web analytics for their 5 top properties. This role supports the marketing & sales teams in their efforts to build their subscriber base (B2C). It also impacts product development and works closely with the retention analytics manager to develop cross-sell & up-sell programs.
Director of Strategic Planning - Dow Jones
Location: NY/NJ - $225k

We have been retained by Dow Jones to find the right-hand person to the VP of Strategy & Analysis for their consumer media business. This position is unique in that it has been created for the purpose of career-pathing this person into the VP-role within 12-18 months. In the meantime, you have to learn their entire business, continue with team building & staff mgmt, budget/P&L, consulting with internal clients for marketing and financial analytics and oversee the implementation of their new campaign mgmt system. It will be a busy year…
 Supervisor - Digital Marketing Analytics
Location: Los Angeles & San Francisco, CA

One of our oldest and best analytics clients has asked us to help them find two key players in newly created positions in LA & SF. This is undoubtedly one of the best firms to work for - especially on the analytics team where they pay extremely well and have proven to be a strong data-driven decision making culture. Manage relationships with blue chip technology & entertainment clients while providing cutting edge analytics around campaigns, site traffic and product development/corp. development. You will also manage 1-3 analysts. Great working experience, great resume-builder. Cannot say enough about these guys.
