First Web Analytics Book Club Review: Web Analytics an Hour a Day, by Avinash Kaushik

Book Club ReviewMy team has been in the web analytics space for a few years now, so obviously we know Avinash Kaushik - which is to say that we know who he is. I have personally bugged him enough at eMetrics conferences and other events, so that I think there is at least a 30% chance he could pick me out of a lineup, as well. I know about Avinash’s rise in esteem within the web analytics community. But to tell you the truth, I never really understood the whole thing. Why this guy?

Now I get it. Now I understand why he is not just respected - he has followers.

In short, if Avinash can explain web analytics to an English Lit major like me, he can explain it to anyone. The book is virtually idiot-proof. He starts with a simple concept: Companies in the web analytics space spend millions of dollars on web analytics, chasing optimization of hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on campaigns and their websites, which are in turn chasing billions of dollars of online revenue. That is what is at stake.

My Advice: Jumpstart Your Analytics Career with a Vendor

Web Analytics ConferenceVendors can be a great training ground for new entrants in the field. They offer a variety of positions, locations, and technologies that make for a good jumping-off point. If you are looking to break into the field or to move up in the field, my first advice would be to read Judah's post about how to get that analytics job by immersing yourself in the community (Judah's Post ). His post is filled with great tips to use to build your network. Next, consider working for a vendor as a great place to start a career in analytics or to take it to the next level.

When I say vendor, I don't mean just an analytics vendor, as there are really only a handful of pure analytics vendors, and they aren't all going gangbusters right now. But, if you think of the entire ecosystem, there are tons of vendors in the space. I'm talking about mobile analytics, testing and targeting platforms, voice of the customer vendors, email vendors, etc. Go look at the sponsor list of eMetrics or Web Analytics Wednesday and you’ll get the idea.

Here are a few reasons why I think vendors are a great place to get your start (and I'm talking from experience here).

Because both articles present the question of average conversion rates as a "debate" but also list out sites with conversion rates in the 10-15% range, the casual reader may be tempted to come to some spurious conclusions. So let’s be clear: conversion rates ARE in the 2-3% range...
