Hitting the Road

I got clearance from the wife and a green light from the tower. I am hitting the road this summer to spread the word: things are picking up. Time to think about the next step in your career… Time to think about your resource strategy.

It is still a buyers market, but the activity levels of the past eight weeks were higher than they have been in over a year. We had more requests for talent in the past twelve weeks than we had in the prior eight months.

You have to have a career strategy. There is an opportunity coming up shortly where there is going to be both supply and demand in the web analytics and search marketing talent marketplace. There are going to be a lot of people switching seats. If you have your priorities in order and a good understanding of the marketplace you will make better-educated career decisions.

I will be sponsoring and speaking at the Web Analytics Wednesday in Columbus, OH on August 12th. The new version of my “Career Management in the Web Analytics and Search Marketing” presentation includes topics such as: evaluating opportunities, marketing yourself, building your personal brand, proactive job search, state of the career marketplace, future of the career marketplace…

I am really looking forward to meeting this group. According to Tim Wilson, the group started in April of 2008 and they are already averaging 20-30 people per meeting. They take one of the back rooms at Barley’s Smoke House & Brew Pub. Makes me hungry just writing that. It sounds to me like they have the perfect format: 30-minutes of cocktails and schmoozing, order some dinner, hear the presentation while the food cooks and then some Q&A over dinner and drinks. Sounds awesome.

If you’re in Columbus on August 12th you have to come say hello. You can register on the Demystified site.

I also signed up for the X Change Conference in San Francisco September 9-12. This one is at the St. Regis (Starwood points!) and it is by invitation only for vendors (thank you Eric).

This year they added a day before the conference (the 9th) for education (Think Tank Training Day). It seems like a cool opportunity – you basically work through an analysis for the day with a group of top web analytics professionals. Zero theory – all hands-on working sessions.

I am hoping to add a WAW in July. Not sure where yet. Any ideas?

I am also going to do SES in Chicago in December. Would love to sponsor and speak at a WAW that week in Chicago. Anybody in Chicago that would like to help out and perhaps host the event please send me a note.

Stay tuned. Future tour dates to be announced.
