Internet Retailer – the antidote for the recession blues
When I read my Internet Retailer newsletter, I often have to check the date. Did I click the wrong button and accidentally invert my inbox?
We are in the middle of the MOAR (mother of all recessions… sorry) and all other publications are as gloomy as can be. In fact, it has turned into a bit of a doom and gloom contest out there. I guess that sells magazines and brings in clicks. But not IR. They keep churning out good news.
Check out the headlines from today:
With 26% tabulated, Top 500 retailers lifted sales by 21.4% last year
Urban Outfitters ends the year with strong web sales
Q4 web sales increase 10.5% for Shutterfly
NBTY reports a 55% web sales lift for Q1 of FY 2009
Not bad.
Part of it is the fact that Internet Retail as a sector is simply outperforming the rest of the economy. There are more positive stories to tell. But the other part is that these guys are just unabashed cheerleaders for their space. I love it. If you catch them on a slow news week, the positive stories (required, it seems, in all newsletters) will refer to companies you have never heard of… but rest assured they will be in there to balance the doom and gloom. It is nice to see some positive spin these days. Good work guys.
If you want to make your stomach hurt again you can click over to CickZ. They started a Layoff Tracker for Digital Marketing Jobs. Thanks guys – just what we needed.
